The third Tuesday of the month, ANIMATED INSIGHTS BY SHANNON MUIR takes you inside Shannon’s latest reflections on writing, animation, and life in general. To catch up on all posts, check out the Animated Insights portion of the website!
In an age where so much original programming for animation is being released by streaming companies, it would seem that interest in animation on a disc format (such as DVD or Blu-Ray) would completely fade entirely. However, we are far from that point yet. As we’ve become more global, people seem to be expressing interest in content from all over the world – some of which may be region locked and others playable on machines in our own country.
The streaming services don’t offer all animation available at all times. Some animation may never be licensed to streaming services. Also, the penetration of streaming services in different parts of the world varies. There’s also issues of the quality of the animation itself depending on how it is viewed, which is too complex to get into here.
Lastly, it’s also worth noting that a couple decades ago, people were sure vinyl records would never be a viable format again. Yet, they have returned with high popularity as I write this. So I don’t think it’s fair to say that discs featuring animation are dead… at least not yet.
Until next month,
Shannon
