I gave some thought after my “New Adventures” column a couple weeks back and decided that the next show I’m likely to be binge-watching is SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER, with all episodes available November 16th, 2018, on Netflix. Here is the recently-released trailer:
As VOLTRON was winding down in the 1980s, my other favorite animated series would come into prominence – JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS. As a teenage woman, I related to the many female characters and incredible development of character and story.
However, even before VOLTRON premiered, I’d been a regular viewer of HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. Overall, this show had great storytelling too, and really strong female characters, but not enough of them. That’s why I became very excited with the debut of SHE-RA’s original run, and watched every episode. However, both VOLTRON and JEM carried a stronger pull.
My interest in the past success – and future potential – of the SHE-RA property makes SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER my next show to binge-watch. The title alone leads me to hope I will find many strong female characters to root for. It’ll hinge on the storytelling.
Until next week,
Shannon
