ANIMATED INSIGHTS BY SHANNON MUIR takes you inside Shannon’s latest reflections on her passion for animation as a medium, and other animated insights about life. To catch up on all posts, check out the Animated Insights portion of the website! This week, Shannon takes an overall view on DUCKTALES Season Two.
When the first half of DUCKTALES SEASON TWO re-introduced another Disney fan favorite character in what amounted to both a crossover and expansion of the DUCKTALES universe (by introducing DARKWING DUCK in an origin in a way that both was a tribute to the original, plus paved its own way), I was pleasantly surprised. Honestly, I couldn’t see how the creative team would top that.
Exceed it, they did!
While I won’t go into the details of how, I will say that bring Della Duck – the sister of Donald and mother of Huey, Dewey, and Louie – into the show allows for an amazing range of complexity that the prior series couldn’t handle. Also, the twisted family relationship between Lena and her aunt Magica DeSpell takes some dark psychological turns that both make for great character development and storytelling.
This isn’t your older generation’s DUCKTALES… but it is worth the ride. Check out this video that helps set you up for the second half of Season Two. It was originally shared at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, at a panel I couldn’t manage to get into this year.
Join me in two weeks as I discuss the finale of the long-running animated series MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC.
