Typical Writing Day
I typically set aside two to three weeknights a week, plus part of the weekend, for writing. I once heard the advice to treat it like a part-time job, and I really took that to heart. Nobody will take my writing career seriously if I don’t take it seriously myself!
On the weeknights, when I get home from work, I generally give myself an hour or two to unwind from the day before launching into writing. I’ll walk the dogs, stare mindlessly at my phone, whatever. And then, when it’s time to get down to business, I open my laptop. It’s both the easiest and the hardest step of the process.
I’ll typically start a writing session by rereading what I wrote in the last writing session, both to get back into the story and to do a little editing/tidying up. I try never to go back farther than that, though, otherwise I get caught up in a revision rabbit hole when I should be drafting. Still, I allow myself that little bit of editing, though, before I start writing new words.
I try to write a minimum of 1k words in a sitting, but I prefer to shoot for 2k. I write in one hour chunks of time, with little breaks in between to blink and refill my drink and let my mind wander over what I’m writing next.
Also, one of the best elements of my writing day: usually, I’m writing alongside my writing partner. Well, “alongside.” She lives across the country from me, but we Skype several times a week. So while I’m writing, more often than not, she’s in the little window at the top of my screen, working on her own novel. It’s such a great way to stay accountable and also make writing less of a solitary undertaking.

She works full-time as an accountant in the suburbs of Chicago, where she lives with her two dogs and two cats, but her true passion is writing. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, and waking up at the crack of dawn every weekend to watch the Premier League.
