Interview with the Author:

What initially got you interested in writing?

I started writing young, cranking out some short stories on my mom’s old manual typewriter. (My first was about a man setting himself on fire!) But I was just kind of noodling around and didn’t take it seriously until college.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

I wrote plays through college and I thought that’s what I wanted to do. But a playwriting career is near-impossible so I took a ‘day job’ to pay the bills and that ended up consuming my time and focus. I left writing behind. By the time I realized that I better do something with my writing or I’d regret it, I realized wanted to do something solitary. Plays, films, theater – there is a development process that includes a host of people. And you are relying on other people to make the script into a real living breathing thing. Novels are a simpler way to accomplish the goal of just getting the story out into the world.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want them to have fun, to use it to escape whatever it is they want to escape. I think that there’s value to escapist entertainment – that’s not a terribly popular view, but it’s nice to just sink into another world and enjoy the action.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love hearing from my readers. More than one has shared with me that my books helped them get through a particularly rough path, that they were able to jump into my world and escape their own for a little bit. That was an extraordinary thing to hear, and kind of helps me to keep going on the books. (See below.)

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Ironically, the solitary time! It’s what I savor most as a writer, but it’s also the most dangerous for me. I’m a pretty harsh critic with myself and feel like everything I churn out is rubbish. It’s nice to have other people in your corner cheering you on, and giving honest feedback.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

Ignore your inner critic. She’s just being cruel.

About the Author:

Karen Greco is originally from Rhode Island and loves hot wieners from New York System, but can’t stand coffee milk. She studied playwriting in college (and won an award or two). After not writing plays for a long time, a life-long obsession with exorcists and Dracula drew her to urban fantasy, where she decapitates characters with impunity. Steele City Blues is the third book in the Hell’s Belle series, after Hell’s Belle (the first) and Tainted Blood (number two). She writes contemporary romance for a small press under the pen-name Jillian Sterling, and has a day job in entertainment publicity.
