“Earth to Summer. Earth to Summer.”

Summer’s best friend, Daina, waved her hand in front of her face to get her attention. Summer pushed it out of the way.

“You’re blocking my view!”

“Yeah, we all know Tranyon is the hottest bod in school, but he’d never look twice at you. Or me.”

Now, a frustrated Summer turned on Daina.

“You mean because I’m not pretty and perky like a cheerleader? Come on! Not all boys are like that.”

“No. That’s not what I meant.”

Daina looked very uncomfortable.

“Then what did you mean?” Summer asked, speaking each word slowly and firmly.

“Because you’re some abandoned kid no one wanted who just left you at some fire station or something.”

Summer grabbed her friend Daina by the shirt.

“That’s not true! My parents gave me up to another loving home because they cared about me.”

“Let go, Summer. You’re hurting me.”

Summer, suddenly aware of what she was doing, let go of Daina in embarrassment and shame.

“Oh, Daina. I’m so sorry. But what you said. Where did you hear it?”

“From Brittia, the head cheerleader. Her Mom was the one that found you years ago, and when she saw you had eyes for Tranyon, she blabbed to the whole school.”

Summer didn’t know what to think. Could this all be a jealous prank, or did Brittia really know something her parents hid from her all these years?
