Because,” her adoptive father answered. “It was ultimately proven her boyfriend wasn’t the father. She probably already knew that, but no one can get her to confess.”

“So, did they ever find the right guy?”

Summer couldn’t bear to say father.

“No one knew for sure where to start looking.. Violet had issues distinguishing what was real or not. She thought she’d gotten caught up in some baby trafficking for college tuition thing. But no such events happened. They were all in her mind,” her adoptive mother elaborated.

Summer cringed.

“So, the whole town knew about this?”

Her adoptive mother nodded.

“For your sake everyone worked hard to keep it a secret. Violet’s parents just up and abandoned their apartment one day after they found out she was pregnant. I can’t imagine giving up on your child, or grandchild.”

Summer didn’t know what to feel. Perhaps she could inherit some of her mother’s issues, or maybe not. Maybe someday she might run into her family, and not even know it.

“What do you know about Tranyon’s family?” she blurted out.
