I’ve been very fortunate to attend San Diego Comic-Con as a professional for over 20 years. I’ve also attended and spoken at other conventions, and I’ve held on to all those name tags and speaker plates. For various reasons, a box with a lot of them ended up in the garage of my rented apartment.
Then, this summer, something happened that came very close to ruining some of them and some other precious childhood items that were in the box. Thankfully, the water damage was minimal to only a few items that a little drying saved. However, when I realized how much could have been lost by someone else’s carelessness, it really hurt inside.
Yes, I know they are just things. But going through each one, checking for damage before transferring to a new box (which was then taken to the off-site storage acquired more recently), I realized how each badge or program reminded me that all these years of my animated adventure were real and not just something I dreamed up.
I’m so very thankful for the friends I’ve made, the things I’ve learned, and the ways I’ve been able to give back over the years at conventions. I hope this is able to continue for some time to come.
And when the time comes that it isn’t the case anymore, I want to be in a place to appreciate it all now, not lament on it too late after not fully realizing all I’ve been able to be a part of.
Until next week!
