BETWEEN THE PAGES: FINDING MY VOICE – Promoting the Book at Wondercon

Welcome to the limited series return of BETWEEN THE PAGES, running Mondays and Wednesdays now through mid-December 2020! Dubbed BETWEEN THE PAGES: FINDING MY VOICE, follow Shannon’s journey as she learned and grew to become more of a public speaker, and how she’s still learning today! Today is Installment 13,  “Promoting My Book at Wondercon”.

As I said earlier, I’d never seen myself as the “star” of GARDNER’S GUIDE TO WRITING AND PRODUCING ANIMATION. The people that meant the most to me were the people I’d interviewed for the book. So, I decided to make panel pitches to Wondercon and Comic-Con International: San Diego on the animation process, with myself as the moderator. Then, I reached out to people I interviewed to see if they would be on the panels. Some said yes, others declined but recommended me to friends of theirs – but people I’d never met – that they knew would be attending the conventions.

The first production panel happened at 2007 Wondercon, back when it still happened in San Francisco; it was also by first trip to San Francisco. This panel featured Greg Weisman, Stan Berkowitz, Dwayne McDuffie, and Adam Beechen. Greg and Stan I previously knew; Dwayne and Adam were both people I met by referral.

Next installment, I’ll talk about the version of this panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego.
