Narcissist, sociopath, and shameless backstabber Jubal Van Zandt is the best damn thief in the history of the Revived Earth…and he won’t shut up about it.
But not everybody in the swampy, soggy, feudal future approves of Jubal’s vocation. The Guild—the religious fanatics who helped rebuild civilization after the collapse—in particular are waiting for their opportunity to slip the noose around his neck.
Which is why when the renowned Guild knight Carina Xiao—a.k.a. the Bloodslinger—contacts Jubal about an off-the-books job that violates Guild Law, he’s too intrigued to say no. He is the best damn thief in the history of the Revived Earth, after all.
Part bizarro ecopunk, part outworld thriller, part odd-couple roadtrip, Jubal Van Zandt and the Revenge of the Bloodslinger is a 150% futurepunk quest for blood and betrayal across the Revived Earth.
Interview With the Author:
What initially got you interested in writing?
I was really young when I realized that I couldn’t play make-believe forever, that people would expect me to grow up and adult all the time, so I started moving more and more of my made up worlds into my head where I could play with them no matter who was watching or what else was going on around me. Learning to read and write was like a revelation—I could play pretend in some other author’s world or I could write down my own, whichever sounded like the most fun at the moment.
How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?
Once I learned that other people wrote for a living, I never wanted to do anything else. I thought, “Well, that’s my destiny,” and I went for it. I wrote all the time—stories, poems, songs, scripts—and shared the funniest ones with my siblings, but I knew I needed widespread distribution to become a “real” writer. When I finally heard about the internet (in fifth grade—don’t judge!), I started bribing my granny to take me to the library every Saturday so I could look up submissions processes. As I got older, I made my plans and moved to New York City because that’s where all real writers lived, and even ended up in an art school in Brooklyn. I got my stories ripped apart in critiques, took soul-crushing internships within the publishing industry, and was frequently threatened with eviction for unpaid rent, but every bit was worth it because it got me to becoming a published author.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
A new perspective on the people around you, especially the ones you don’t like or can’t understand. I have a friend who calls my writing style “I bet I can make you say you were wrong fiction,” but all I’m really trying to do is show readers that if you knew everything about another person—even a total jerkbag—it would be impossible to hate them. If I can convince one reader to have compassion on the people around them—even the total jerkbags—then the world will be that much better of a place.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
Definitely readers’ reactions! I love everything from “___ was my favorite character!” and “I can’t wait for the next book!” to “You &^%@! How could you do that to ____?!” Pretty weird, I know, but I’ve been told I’m a little bit sadistic when it comes to my characters, and any intense or visceral reaction to it is thrilling for me because it means all my hard work is paying off.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Trying to do justice to the stories in my head. Everything seems so perfect when it’s floating around in the mind-ether, anchoring it to the page with words can be frustrating.
What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?
Go for it with everything you’ve got. There are going to be haters, well-meaning people who think they’re protecting you with their discouraging reality checks, and tons of self-doubt along the way, but all of that stuff eventually passes. Remember what it is you’re doing all of this for. Make your dream happen, no matter what tries to stop you. It’s going to be worth it.
What ways can readers connect with you?
I’m kind of an internet hermit—I don’t have the twittings or the bookface—but I do love talking to readers. You can find me on Goodreads or at my blog, www.WhiteTrashCappuccino.com
About the Author:
I am invincible. I am a mutant. I have 3 hearts and was born with no eyes. I had eyes implanted later. I didn’t have hands, either, just stumps. When my eyes were implanted they asked if I would like hands as well and I said, “Yes, I’ll take those,” and pointed with my stump. But sometimes I’m a hellbender peeking out from under a rock. When it rains, I live in a music box.
But I’m also a tattoo-addict, coffee-junkie, drummer, and aspiring skateboarder. Jesus actually is my homeboy.
