Charlie Sykes takes everything and everyone at face value, and believes life would be a lot easier if everyone else did, too. Jace Knight, international Aussie hotelier and purported playboy, has never met anyone like the absurdly literal and obliviously beautiful American who applies to his personal assistant position. The trouble is, how do you seduce a woman whose definition of flirting comes straight out of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary? That, and he’s not the only one after Charlie. Seems Mr. Knight may not be a reformed criminal after all. Charlie soon finds herself caught up in a whirlwind of dangerous international espionage that takes her from the hip streets of Sydney to the majestic Great Barrier Reef and the wild, desolate outback. A terrible trap’s being laid, but how will Charlie protect herself and prevent a devastating betrayal when she can’t even sort out what her heart’s telling her?

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

Lesley Young’s take on becoming a published romance author

It’s been a wild ride and no worse than I expected

Thanks for hosting me on the tour for The Australian, book two in my standalone Crime Royalty Romance series!

What initially got you interested in writing?

Well I’m a journalist so my first interest was always in storytelling. You have to write in order to tell a story. As for fiction, a fire lit in me after reading The Hunger Games. I thought, I could write something like this. Not YA, but fast-paced, and super intense. A year or so later, bored, I decided, I’m going to give this a whirl. Sky’s End, a sci-fi romance that was published by SoulMate in 2013, is my first fiction effort.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

There was never a question of writing a book and not wanting it to be published. But actually doing it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. It is so personal. Someone once said to be a great actor you have to learn to be vulnerable. I think the same is true of novelists. Being a happy author requires courage.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

A thrill they won’t soon forget. Heroines they adore. My plots are unique, and varied. And every love story is very different, steeped in rich character development. So simply, a great read!

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The experience itself. I am integrated with the lives of my characters, thinking and being, living and loving. There’s nothing like it. Better than the movies.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Marketing. Publishing. Getting in front of readers. I landed myself a pretty big agent with  this series and still ended up self-publishing. I’ve had to teach myself to be a book publicist as well as a writer. Not a lot of fun, especially when you’re emotionally attached to the outcome.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

As my agent told me: there is no science to what sells and what doesn’t sell. Squirting out your first book is not unlike getting off the bus in Hollywood and hoping to become a famous actress. So, my advice, is focus on your art. If you write with passion, and work really hard, the results will shine.
