ANIMATED INSIGHTS – Wondercon 2019 Recap

Now every first and third Thursday each month,  ANIMATED INSIGHTS BY SHANNON MUIR takes you inside Shannon’s latest reflections on her passion for animation as a medium, and other animated insights about life. To catch up on all posts, check out the Animated Insights portion of the website! This week, Shannon recaps her time at Wondercon 2019. Every year for more years than I can count, my husband and I go on Friday and Saturday to Wondercon in Anaheim, CA. We also attended the one in Los Angeles together, though I have only been once to when Wondercon was still back in San Francisco. Friday didn’t get too animation focused until later in the evening. We saw the DARK PHOENIX panel, as well as thoroughly enjoyed getting to hear from the director and four stars of the TOLKIEN bio-pic coming out on May 10th. These were actually the first events we’d ever attended at the Arena at the Anaheim Convention Center. That night, we went to the BATTLE OF THE PLANETS 40TH ANNIVERSARY PANEL. Though for various reasons most scheduled guests weren’t able to attend, editor Franklin Cofod (also known for his work on VOLTRON), came and shared a wealth of information he had along with getting to see a 40th anniversary promo reel that included various interviews with Sandy Frank. This was an intimate, unique event not to be missed. Saturday morning found my husband and I back up early in the programming queue line to see the panel for SHE-RA and get the scoop on Season 2, coming April 26th to Netflix. They showed a trailer that is now available online to the public.  See it below: After that, we headed over and were a couple minutes late for the panel on THE DRAGON PRINCE, which featured the creators along with the voice actors for Vieren and his children, Claudia and Soren. The three of them bounced off one another so well even seeing them in person, it was clear how they make a strong “dark magic” family off-screen and on. There was a mention that Season 3 will come, but no precise air date. We ended the afternoon with an event we love to try to get to yearly, Mark Evanier’s CARTOON VOICES panel. It’s always wonderful to hear from a mix of newer and seasoned voice actors and see what each can bring to the table as well as learn about their careers. See you in two weeks for a review of THE DRAGON PRINCE, SEASON 2. Here’s the trailer for you, so if you haven’t seen it already, catch up now!
