Book Description:

Blood is thicker than water…but can it melt a heart of ice?

Adelaide Miller gave up everything she knows to remain in Prince Zayne Godfrey’s alternate reality and assume her rightful place as eldest princess in the rival kingdom of Forath.

For an independent, free-spirited woman, however, royal life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it’s downright smothering. Especially since the vengeful Rosalind has gone AWOL.

Zayne is eager to wed Princess Addie—but their fathers seem more intent on keeping them apart. The longer Rosalind goes missing, the more suspicious each monarch becomes that the other is guilty of foul play.

Both kingdoms may soon face a strong, new rival intent on gaining power foretold by an ancient prophecy. To protect their chance at happily ever after, Zayne and Addie must partner with unlikely allies to save the one person intent on destroying them both.

But victory will not come without a price, and in the end, someone may have to pay—in blood.

Interview with the Author:

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’ve always enjoyed writing (yep, was totally the kid who got all excited about essay assignments in my school days) but didn’t attempt novel work until I got sidelined a few summers back with a broken finger. (Repeat after me:  I will not play ball without a mitt… I will not play ball without a mitt…) Bored and stuck inside to avoid itchy, sweaty casts, I started playing around with a story line. And, as they say, the rest was history.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

Once I finished the first (or maybe second or third lol) draft of my debut manuscript, I figured what the hell—why not try to get it published? I mean, I’ll already made it past the hardest part, right?

Riiiiight. Little did I know. 😉

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I write to offer readers an escape. We’re all overworked, overstressed, over-Mommed, over-Dadded—we need a break now and then! With reading, you can get lost in a story no matter the time of day, or if the weather will or won’t cooperate. Reading offers us an escape, be it for five minutes or five hours. I just try to make sure my books are fun, heartfelt, and end with happily ever afters.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

When a friend (or even a fan—I think I’m up to 4 now!) calls or messages me, all excited about something they’re reading in one of my books. Or when they finish one book and demand to know when the next in series will be out. THAT makes my day.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Carving out the time to do it, and then once I have that time blocked out, not being tempted to do something else. Like clean that room I’ve been putting off cleaning the other 4 times I sat down to write because I’m on deadline, or playing on the Book of Face. Hey—PR work is writing, right? *shakes fist at computer screen*

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

No one ever told me writing would be easy, and they were right not to. It’s not easy. In fact, at times it can be downright brutal. We authors are notoriously introverted, which leaves a lot of alone time where self-doubt can start to creep in. DON’T LET IT. Trust your instinct, trust your beta readers, trust your heart. AND WRITE ON.

Excerpt:

“…How long has it been since you stretched your wings, went on a leisurely flight?”

Tristan bristled. “I am unfamiliar with your customs in Edana, Prince Zayne, but here in Forath, those responsible for protecting our kingdom have little time for leisure.”

“A pity, that.”

“How so?”

Zayne bent to press a kiss upon his betrothed’s hair. Its silken strands tickled his chin, and her scent washed over him anew. His enjoyment in the continued battle of wits with her prick of a brother waned and was replaced by the desire for a new activity. One that involved himself, Adelaide, and far less clothing.

As if reading his mind, she shifted against him, teasing his length. Had they been alone, the temptation to take her now, here in the stables, might have been too great to resist. The thought of her naked body stretched out willingly beneath him spurred Zayne to cease his battle of words and hasten their retreat.

“Because to fly often is not only good for the soul, but also serves to strengthen your wings and keep your battle skills keen.”

“Of course. But as Adelaide cannot fly, she need not join you. It is her studies that should be my sister’s primary focus prior to your upcoming wedding.”

“Then I shall tutor her on your family’s lineage while we are away, as I am well versed in the subject.” He leaned down farther, pressing a kiss to the hollow beneath her ear. She shivered in his arms as he murmured, “A few hours is all it should take.”

“It won’t take anywhere near that long,” Addie whispered.

Her breathy, musical voice spoke to the beast within. Three days was all that had passed since he’d seen her last, yet it seemed an eternity. His bed had felt empty, her soft skin achingly absent alongside his. Zayne took several more steps toward the door, guiding her with him. Tristan, however, continued to follow.

“I have every confidence in your tutoring skills, Prince Zayne, but my father issued strict orders that Princess Adelaide shall not leave the grounds unaccompanied.”

Addie tensed in Zayne’s arms. Of course a decree limiting her travels would create such a reaction in his free-spirited nymph. When they first met a few short weeks ago, she had been traveling alone. To now be restricted by King Jarin’s rules was undoubtedly difficult for her.

Ah, but he had ways to help ease her mind from these anxieties. Ways his body craved as much as the next breath. “An understandable decree, and one I pledge to uphold as her royal escort.”

“That is Blackstone’s assignment,” Tristan said. “Not yours.”

“Please, Tristan,” said Addie.

“Is Blackstone no longer your personal guard, then, my lord?” asked Zayne.

Tristan’s eyes narrowed and remained fixed upon him, ignoring his sister’s plea. “He has been assigned to protect the royal family, Adelaide included.”

“A difficult task when the prince and princess are in different locations, is it not?”

“Indeed. But as we are both here at the present, I feel he is quite capable of offering protection to us both.”

“I have no doubt in his abilities.” Zayne gripped Adelaide tighter with one hand and shoved the stable’s rear door wide with his other. “Unfortunately for you, the present has now passed.”

As he summoned his transformation, the air around them began to whip and swirl, masking their escape in a cloud of dust and straw. The beast within wasn’t to be denied, and not a soul in Forath Castle could stop them. In an instant, they were airborne, Adelaide safe and secure in his taloned grasp.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’ve always loved to write. It has been a part of me since I was a little girl. I grew up listening to music. It was always played in the house, at my grandparents, aunts and uncles. I remember at an early age listening to the words and understanding the sorrow, sadness, or happiness within them. These were small stories played out in song. I knew then that I wanted to tell stories that touched people’s lives.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

I always knew that was what I wanted to do. I worked very hard, took rejection after rejection, and still sent out manuscripts. The criticism an author takes is a part of the job, and I grew better because of it. I wouldn’t change a thing.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want readers to feel while reading my books. I want them to be placed within my characters lives and to experience the story with them. I’d love for them to feel contentment, and happiness when finishing one of my novels.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

My readers. I cannot express enough how much a kind review means, or when I get emailed about how much they loved my book. Those are the very reason I write. It always places a smile upon my face. I adore my readers.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

When I have nothing and by this I mean when I am stuck halfway through the story and have to stop to figure it all out. This is so frustrating especially when I’m so invested in my characters and just want to tell their story.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

Learn the craft. Research, talk to other authors know what you are doing and how to conduct yourself. Learn about the publishing industry and how publishers work. Have a thick skin. Authors take scrutiny all of the time. There are bad reviews, not everyone is going to like your book. Rejections they’re a part of the job as well.

 EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

CHAPTER ONE SACRED LEGACY

Jamestown, Virginia, July 1740

Tsura Harris lifted the hem of her green skirt and stepped up onto the wooden plank. She clutched her reticule in her right hand and reached for the rope with her left. The planked bridge swayed as the boat rocked against the seas. She stared at the water below. White-capped waves crashed along the ship’s hull, rocking the boat. She inhaled, forced her chin up, and took another step. She walked the short distance to the boardwalk, releasing the breath she’d held when her boot touched land. She planted both feet upon the wooden dock and set her shoulders, but the reminder of why she was here intensified the weight upon her chest. Despair was her shadow, and it was with her today.

“Sister!”

Her brother’s deep, masculine shout came from above.

She shaded her eyes from the hot afternoon sun and peered up at him. His stature always shocked her. Micah Walker was six foot with broad shoulders and strong arms, a spitting image of their father, Kade. His white shirt gaped open to show the tanned skin beneath, a sign of too many days out on the water. Long blond hair waved in the breeze. Her handsome brother had his pick of the ladies, but still hadn’t settled down. It was a shame. She knew he wanted children and a wife of his own, but his heart belonged to the sea and time would lend him those favors only when he was ready.

“You must wait,” he called and raced past his men carrying crates of goods onto the wharf.

She placed her bag onto the wooden walk and clasped her gloved hands together.

He reached her, his cheeks glowing and dark eyes lit with mischief. Before she could discourage him, he picked her up and swung her around. Her boots kicked the bag, knocking it over, as his strong arms held her tight.

Micah had always been affectionate. He never shied away from holding her hand, kissing her cheek, or teasing her like a brother would. He’d come to her side when she needed him the most. When her life had fallen apart, and she couldn’t see past her own misery to pick herself up. He had carried her, and she loved him for it.

“You cannot go off without wishing me well.” He smiled down at her.

“If you would simply release me, I’d be able to make it so,” she retorted. He was the only one, aside from her mother and father, who she allowed to touch her.

“Very well, nit.” He set her in front of him. The nickname he used for her was one of endearment and came from her pestering him as a child.

“Thank you.” She smoothed her skirt before bringing her eyes to meet his.

“You do not need to do this.”

She glanced away unable to stare at him any longer.

“Come sail with me.”

She shook her head. The urge to leave caused her legs to shake. She couldn’t be around him any longer. His cheerful disposition haunted her and made her think of things she’d rather forget.

“I know you don’t want to speak of this, but—”

“No, Micah.”

“Tsura, you need to forgive—”

“Forgiveness is not within my heart.”

“It surely is.”

She shook her head, careful not to release the many pins holding her thick corkscrew curls in a loose chignon.

“It is in all of us.”

She glared at her brother.

“Do not speak to me of forgiveness, brother. My heart is cold to it.”

His dark eyes watered, and she knew her words had hurt him, but she didn’t care. It was better this way—it was easier.

“Will you not reconsider?”

“No.”

“Please stay. I will protect you.”

Protection was not what she needed. She could care less if she died. It’d be a relief from the constant pain she felt each day.

“I should’ve taken you to mother and father.”

“Do not speak to them of my presence here.”

“They will understand.”

“Not one word.”

Micah sighed. “As you wish.”

“I must go.” Anger pressed on her spine, and she straightened.

His shoulders dropped.

“Be safe. Trust no one.”

She nodded.

“I port back in Jamestown one month to this day. You will be here.”

It was not a question, and she didn’t know if a month would be enough. Would the time between then and now ever fade from her soul? Would she be ready to return? She didn’t know if she could go back and so she didn’t answer.

“Hiram knows of you coming?”

“He does.”

“Very well.” He straightened and smiled. “Know that I love you.”

She fought the tears. If Micah saw one ounce of sadness within her, he’d throw her back aboard the Jade and take her with him.

“As I you.” She refused to say the words.

He picked up her bag and handed it to her.

“Thank you. Now go. You have work to do and whores to see.” She smirked.

“Ah, that I do.” He pulled her into a final embrace. “You will find your way. I am sure of it.” He held her away from him, and his eyes searched hers. “Remember who you are.”

She pressed on his chest and stepped out of his embrace. She couldn’t help the furrow of her brow or the set of her chin. The reminders of the life she led were never to be forgotten, and because of that she’d be forever lost.

Micah sensed the change in her and left it alone. He bowed, and with a final kiss to her forehead he walked away.

She turned, unable to watch him go, raised to believe it was a sign of weakness, of regret to watch one leave your life. This was meant to be. The world around her had tilted, and even though she wanted nothing more than to go back in time to the lavish house on the hill where she’d felt content, where laughter was but an expression upon her lips, she could not. What had been was no more, and she’d do right to remember it. One year had passed, but the ache inside her soul still remained.

Interview with the Author:

What initially got you interested in writing?

I can’t keep myself from writing. Since I was a little girl, I have spent hours writing down my imaginings, creating characters and scenarios that I would love to happen. I’m just in love with words too and if I manage to describe a scene perfectly, I’m thrilled. When I was in 5th grade, the teacher went around the room asking us each to say what we wanted to be when we grew up. I hung my head, almost in shame, and said, “A writer.” I don’t know why it embarrassed me that I wanted to be a writer. Maybe I knew at a young age that the odds of making a living as a writer are slim. Luckily, I have some day jobs that allow me time to write.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

I had written three novels, and each time I diligently sent them off to agents. Authors search for agents who then sell their novels to publishers, so agents are the gatekeepers.

I received a lot of requests from agents for my novels, but none of them had offered to represent me. Finally, I received a rejection from a New York agent for my novel Trail Mix, which is about two women whose children are growing up and moving on. The women are trying to figure out what their lives should be once their primary role of mother is gone. So they decide to hike the Appalachian Trail to discover who they are. The New York agent and her assistant replied that they enjoyed my writing, but they thought it was sad that the women didn’t know what to do with their lives after their children moved on.

That statement made me blow my top. I was surrounded by women going through that exact scenario. I realized that the New York agents might not be able to relate to the audience I sought to reach. That’s when I published my first novel. Paris Runaway is my fourth novel.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want readers to escape for a little while, to disappear with the characters, wherever they are traveling, which is usually France in my novels. But there are deeper meanings. In Paris Runaway, the message is a clear warning to mothers who put their lives on hold while raising children. This is it – the only life we get, so we’d better get the most of it, while still taking care of our children.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Finishing a story is very rewarding. Looking at all those words, all those chapters, and knowing that I created a story that readers can dive into. I love the idea that my words can work like a transporter from Star Trek and take the reader from their home or their job to a whole new world.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

The most challenging part of writing is the part where I sit down and write, rather than simply talking about the story or brainstorming with writing friends.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

If you have a book in you, the only way to prove it is to write it. Everyone has reasons not to write – life is busy with kids and jobs and relationships – but if you want to be an author, you have to write.

What ways can readers connect with you?

The best way to connect with me is to read my novels. I think that gives readers some real insight into my psyche. I also write a blog and post several times each week – about France, about raising kids, about books I enjoy. The blog is at paulita-ponderings.blogspot.com. I have an author page on Facebook at PaulitaKincerWriter. And, of course, I’m on Twitter too @paulitakincer.

Book Excerpt:

I knocked
on one apartment door that had a wreath hanging on it. It could still be his
door, I justified. Maybe Monsieur Rollande liked to decorate. Avoiding the
wreath, I rapped my knuckles against the worn wood. Maybe Monsieur Rollande
remarried and his new wife chose the wreath of dark-green leaves topped by lily
of the valley with its tiny white, bell-shaped flowers. When I got no response,
I walked to the door opposite. No wreath and no sounds from within. I knocked
three sharp thumps and waited, but heard no squeaking of the floor as someone
moved toward the door. I sighed. No one home again.
There
are worse places to wait,
I thought as I heard a louder crack of thunder from outside. The sky had
been threatening rain all morning, and apparently the clouds now delivered on
their threat. I imagined myself standing outside the gate without buttons to
push as the rain soaked me through the t-shirt, jeans and thin cardigan.
I assessed
the landing where I could be waiting for most of the day. A thick wool rug
covered the floor and a small table fit flush against the wall with a flat
back. The other half curled out in a semi-circle. On the table sat a round
fishbowl with aqua-colored rocks in the bottom. A goldfish swished back and
forth in the dim light. How strange, I thought, as I became entranced
watching the fish make his circles, pausing to open and close his mouth in my
direction a few seconds before swimming around again.
I sank to
the floor with my back against the wall, like the little table. I would be able
to hear or see either door if it should open. I might as well rest my tired
feet. I debated undoing those ankle straps. But I decided to simply rub at the
sore spots while leaving the sandals buckled. Who knew when I’d have to make a
dash to catch someone?
I sat
where I could gaze at the fish, and his endless rounds made me feel calm. I
could feel my breath becoming slower and deeper. I knew I’d find Scarlett
today; I just needed to be patient. Slow and steady, I told myself as I became
more mesmerized with the striking orange fish.
Suddenly
the fish ducked inside one of his faux coral hiding spots. I hadn’t moved or
startled him. I glanced around, moving only my eyes, and I saw the reason for
the fish’s abrupt disappearance.  A
handsome black-and-white cat crawled stealthily up the stairs. His front paws
perched on the top step, and his nose and eyes just peeked between the paws.
The rest of his body must be poised on the stairs below, ready to pounce on the
table and snatch up the fish.
The cat
moved only his eyes too, but they found me, and he froze. I was going to ruin
his attempt at breakfast. I smiled. I missed my own cat Puck. His warmth on my
lap, the way his purring could put me into a trance of well-being. This cat on
the stairs seemed to have accepted the fact that an actual person sat in the
stairwell. His eyes locked with mine, and I saw his body relax. He would not
need to pounce after all. He turned to look at the fish bowl, but the wise
goldfish remained hidden.
“It’s
okay,” I said. I held out my hand, palm up, toward the cat. “Here, kitty. Come
see me.” I didn’t have anything to offer him, but if he smelled my hand, he
might let me pet him, rub my hand over his soft fur, gain some sort of relief
from contact with another living creature.
“Come on,
boy,” I said, making an assumption about his gender. It didn’t matter because
the cat probably didn’t understand English anyway. My voice was soft and
soothing as I tried to coax him. Suddenly, a desire overwhelmed me to hold a
cat on my lap, stroke his soft back, and feel his purr kick in and vibrate
against me. Even a cat that didn’t understand English must sense distress and
want to comfort a human. To feel some sort of release from the past two days
would be such a respite.
“It’s
okay; you’re safe,” I said. “Come on.” I had moved from sitting on the floor to
perching on my knees as I held my hand closer to the cat. Suddenly, the cat
streaked past me. I expected it to stop abruptly at the closed door of the
apartment, but it continued to zoom through the legs of a man and down the
hallway beyond. The door stood open now when it had definitely been closed the
whole time I waited.
I looked
up from the floor, drinking in the man whose brown leather Lacoste shoes stood
before me. The little alligator near the heel marked them as Lacoste, and I
couldn’t decide if I would adore or detest the pomposity of the shoes.
Brown
jeans encased the man’s long legs, and he wore a white broadcloth shirt
unbuttoned at the top. A loose cotton scarf with blue and gold draped loosely
around his neck.
“Are you
trying to seduce my cat?” The timbre of his deep voice, still thick with sleep,
mixed with the French accent on the English words sent a quiver through me. His
words sounded like a promise and a warning.
“Seduce?”
My voice rose at the end of the word and came out like an irritating crow’s
caw, in comparison to his smooth accent.
I jumped
to my feet, feeling the blush rise from the v of my t-shirt up my neck to my
face. “Bonjour,” I mumbled, not quite meeting his eyes. I couldn’t believe he’d
seen me talking to the cat – so naked and vulnerable. This man observed me
being, well, me.
I
remembered why I sat on his doorstep as I turned toward him. “I’m looking for
Monsieur Rollande.”
“That is
me,” he said, in his slight French accent. A little thrill and relief suddenly
washed over me.
“Oh,
Monsieur Rollande, I’m so pleased to meet you. I’m looking for your son, Luc. I
think my daughter Scarlett is with him, at least, I hope she is. She ran away
from home. In Florida … in the United States. She said she was going to stay
with her dad, but then he called, and he hadn’t seen her, and she had these
strange charges on her credit card, and we found out she had flown to Paris to
follow Luc, and I hadn’t even ever met Luc, so I had no idea. I just got on a
plane and came right here, but I couldn’t find anyone at your wife’s apartment,
I mean, your ex-wife, I guess, and I’ve been so afraid.”
Monsieur
Rollande reached a hand forward and put it on my arm to stop my ramble. His
firm hand against my bicep steadied me, like the vibrating cat purr I had
imagined. I took a deep breath. I couldn’t collapse.
“Come
inside,” he said. And if the situation were reversed, I didn’t know if I would
have invited this crazy lady in, the one talking to cats and watching goldfish
and then chattering a mile a minute about sons and flights and runaway
daughters.
But he led
me into his apartment. We stood just inside the entrance in a hallway that had
doors to the left and right.
“It will
be okay,” he said. And his words buoyed me, making me think that maybe it all would
be
fine, as if I had shifted part of my worry about Scarlett somewhere
else. And then, before I could blink them away, tears started to drip from my
eyes faster than I could keep up with them.
“I’m so
sorry,” I said mopping at my face. “I don’t know why I’m crying. I’ve just been
so worried, and I haven’t had anyone to help me find her.” I took a deep, shuddering
breath and resolved to both stop talking and stop crying.
“Come.
Here is the toilet. Go refresh yourself, then we will talk.”
And his
description was literal. The long narrow room held a toilet and a sink along
with a mirror on the wall. No windows. No decorative pictures. No ornamental
doilies on the toilet tank. I blew my nose into some toilet paper and dabbed at
the tracks of tears along my face.
I inhaled
deeply to get control. “I am getting closer to finding Scarlett,” I told myself
in the mirror.

Enchanted Guardian- A love of legendary proportion

In another time, in a place once known as Camelot, they had been lovers. Torn apart by betrayal and lies, Lancelot Du Lac and Nimueh, the Lady of the Lake, had each suffered greatly.

But the magic of the fae had reawakened a man once trapped in stone, and Lancelot was determined to find his long lost love. Only, Nim was desperate to hide her fae soul, as she was marked for death by their mutual enemy.

Though centuries apart had not diminished their passion, they would once again face a dangerous test to prove each was the other’s destiny.

Excerpt:

Lancelot caught her arm, pulling her up short. Nim scowled down at the long, strong fingers. Fine scars ran along his tanned knuckles, evidence of a life around blades. Heaviness filled her, a primitive reaction to the strong, aggressive male taking control of her in the most basic way. Once it might have grown into anger or lust, but now it confused her.

“Take your hand off me,” she said, letting her voice fill with frost.

“No.” He pulled her closer, turning her to face him. “You will answer my questions.”

Nim jerked her arm free. They were so close, she could feel his warm breath against her skin. “About what?”

His nostrils flared as if scenting her. Still, Nim studied his tense jaw and the blood flushing his high cheekbones. The heat of his emotions made her feel utterly hollow. His hand closed around her wrist again, almost crushing her bones.

“There are too many people here,” he growled.

“There are enough people here for safety. Perhaps I don’t want to answer you.”

His eyes held hers a moment, dark fire against the ice of her spirit. That seemed to decide him, for he pulled her close and took a better grip on her arm. “Come with me.”

“Where?”

He didn’t reply, but steered her toward the door, moving so fast she skittered on her heels. She took the opportunity to pull against him, but this time he held her fast. “Don’t.”

The threat was real. Her fighting skills were nothing compared to a knight’s. Lancelot could crush or even kill her with a single blow. Still, that didn’t make her helpless, and she would not let him forget that fact. Rising up on her toes, she put her mouth a mere whisper from his ear. “You forget what I can do. My magic is nothing less than what it was when I was the first among the fae noblewomen. I can defend myself against your brute strength.”

Just not against what he’d done to her heart. She closed her eyes a moment, feeling his breath against her cheek and remembering the past for a long moment before she denied herself that luxury. “Let me go,” she repeated.

In response, he pulled her to the side of the building, refusing to stop until he was deep into the shadows. The ground was little more than cracked concrete there, tufts of grass straggling between the stones. He pushed her against the siding, her back pressed to the rough wood. “Not until I’ve had my say.”

He had both of her arms now, prisoning Nim with the hard, muscled wall of his chest. Anyone walking by might glimpse two lovers in a private tête-à-tête, but Nim drew back as far as she could, something close to anger rising to strike. No one handled her this way, especially not him.

“Then talk,” she said through gritted teeth.

“Aren’t you even surprised to see me?” he demanded.

“Why should I be?” She needed to squash any personal connection between them. Even if she was whole and their people were not at war, he had betrayed her.

He put a hand against her cheek, his fingers rough. She jerked her chin away, burning where his touch had grazed her.

But he was relentless. “I’m told you were caught by Merlin’s spell along with the rest. I know what the fae have become.”

Soulless. As good as dead inside. Lancelot didn’t say the words, but she heard them all the same. “It’s true,” she replied. “It’s all true.”

His expression was stricken as if hearing it from her lips was poison. Good, she thought. Better to be honest. Better that he believe her to be the monster she was.

“Maybe that’s true for some. I don’t believe that about you. You still have too much fire.”

With that, he claimed her mouth in an angry kiss. Nim caught her breath, stifling a cry of true surprise. The Lancelot she’d known had been gentle and eager to please. Nothing like this. And yet the clean taste of him was everything she remembered.

His mouth slanted, breaking past the barrier of her lips to plunder her mouth. The hunger in him was bruising, going far beyond the physical to pull at something deep in her belly. Desire, perhaps, or heartbreak. She wasn’t sure any longer, but she couldn’t stop herself from nipping at his lip, yearning to feel what she had lost. A sigh caught in her throat before she swallowed it down. Surely she was operating on reflex, the memory of kisses. Not desire she might feel now. The warmth and weight of him spoke to something older than true emotion. Even a reptile could feel comfort in the sun. Even she…

Still, that little encouragement was all the permission he needed to slide his hand up her hip to her waist and she could feel the pressure of his fingers. Lancelot was as strong as any fae male, strong enough certainly to overpower her. That had thrilled her once, a guilty admission she’d never dared to make. She’d been so wise, so scholarly, so magical, but an earthy male had found the liquid center of heat buried under all that logic and light. They had always sparked like that, flint against steel.

But then his hand found her breast and every muscle in her stiffened. This was too much. Memory was one thing, but she wasn’t the same now and she refused to have a physical encounter that was nothing more than a ghost of what it should be.

Nim pushed him away. “I don’t want this.”

Something in her look finally made him stop, but his eyes glittered with arousal. “Are you certain about that?”

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

  • What initially got you interested in writing?

I remember writing stories pretty much as soon as I could hold a crayon. My parents were huge readers and I grew up surrounded by bookshelves. Since children believe they can do everything, I started writing and never stopped.

  • How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

I joined a local chapter of the Romance Writers of America. It’s really a terrific organization for educating writers on the practical steps of getting your book into the wild, whether that’s via traditional or independent publishing.

  • What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

First and foremost, entertainment!  I want to create worlds that readers return to over and over again. My characters do tackle issues of belonging and forgiveness, but my stories are hopeful. There’s not always an easy answer tied up in a bow, but there will be a positive ending that will leave readers satisfied and happy for the characters.

  • What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The act of writing. There is nothing better than losing myself in the realms of imagination. Wait – there is one thing better. Finding readers to share the experience! I adore hearing from people who have enjoyed my books, because that’s why I sit for hours typing and drinking cold coffee.  Storytelling is no fun without an audience.

  • What do you find most challenging about writing?

The business side of being an author can be hard. We pretty much have to build our own audiences, so a lot of time gets spent doing marketing and promotion instead of what we do best—telling fabulous tales.

  • What advice would you give to people who want to enter the field?

Take your time and write the best books you can. Write, write, read, read, and write some more. That’s how you develop skill. The first couple of manuscripts are practice pieces, however much you might

adore them. Make your mistakes, enjoy the process, and learn who you are as an artist. That’s when you can really dig deep and produce something brilliant—and that’s how you start a career.

INFINITE HOUSE OF BOOKS INTERVIEW

What initially got you interested in writing?

A: As far back as I can remember, I have always had a keen interest for writing.  I remember filling entire composition notebooks with stories of science fiction and horror when I was only ten or twelve years of age.  I actually still have some of these notebooks, however tattered they have become.  Film always inspired me growing up seeing as my mother loved to show my brother and me films of science fiction and fantasy.  I think her choices of entertainment growing up truly influenced my desire to write.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

A: Sometimes there is this feeling that I think everyone has at least once in their life, when they know exactly what they were meant to do.  A fervent passion that enlightens them and shows them a path of possibilities.  I had a lot of different things I wanted to get involved with, from MMA to Acting and Music, there was never a shortage of things I wanted to try.  I got good at a lot of things but nothing ever came close to my passion for fiction and my desire to create something new.  I honestly feel that it was what I was meant to be, my purpose.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

A: I’ve always found the greatest works of fiction entice emotions.  Whether it be sadness, fear, excitement, humor, etc.  I want Plane Walker, and many of my other writing, to make people question their beliefs.  I want to challenge people, intrigue them.  My favorite author is H. P. Lovecraft and one of the reasons that I love his work so much is because he always challenged you to question everything.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

A: In life, there is very little that we have control over.  Bad things happen and sometimes everything seems to spin out of control.  The most rewarding thing I have found in writing is the power I have over the worlds I create.  When I am writing, I am in control of everything.  It is truly an amazing feeling.  One that neither myself nor anyone else on Earth will ever have in reality.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

A: I would say the most challenging part of writing is fighting writer’s block.  My friends and colleagues always ask me, “How did you write a 450 page book?  I mean seriously?  Didn’t you ever get tired?”  I always tell them yes, I absolutely felt drained very often.  But the best solution I have found to writer’s block is to force yourself to keep writing.  No matter how dull or uncreative it is, you can always go back when the passion reinvigorates and lace that energy back into it.  Progress cannot sleep.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

A: Read A LOT.  I don’t mean just fiction or your specific genre either.  Read a lot of nonfiction, like guides to editing, writing techniques, etc.  A good start is always William Strunk Jr.’s The Elements of Style.  Quite possibly the greatest and easiest tool ever made for authors.  Writing is an art form, and like all art, research and practice make perfect.  Never stop improving!  And lastly, always take yourself seriously.  Hold yourself up to the highest standards in regards to quality.  Never settle for an easy way out in anything.

What ways can readers connect with you?

A: They can always connect through email at:

Personal: Charles.dunphey@gmail.com

Business or Professional: gehennapublishinghouse@gmail.com

Twitter: https://twitter.com/GehennaBooks

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gehennapublishinghouse/

The professional email is probably the quickest way to reach me as my personal email is full of junk, unfortunately.  I am always available for publishing advice, consultations, PR opportunities, short story submissions for Gehenna Publishing House, Editorial Services, and more.  If you think I’d like to hear it or find it interesting, send it over.  We authors need to stick together!

Author Bio:

C.P. Dunphey was born in Staten Island, New York.  He grew up in Southern Mississippi and had an interest in writing since he was very young.  In 2015, he founded his own publishing house, Gehenna Publishing House.  His first novel, Plane Walker, was released in 2016.  He hopes to further his writing as well as offer authors opportunities to be heard and read, his dream being that Gehenna Publishing House becomes a household name.  The sequel to his novel, Plane Walker, titled Heiron, is slated for release in early 2017.

Interview with the Author:

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’ve always had a love affair with books, computer games, and anything that happened to capture my imagination. I loved exploring new worlds, meeting new characters and becoming completely immersed in an alternate reality.

I just feel naturally into writing and storytelling. I started writing stories (and really bad Ultima fan-fiction) back in middle school. I continued writing stories just for myself for many years. After I had my son, I wrote stories for him to encourage a love for books, storytelling and reading. I eventually wrote a young adult story for him that ended up being a full-length novel. The realization that I could actually write an entire book astounded me.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

After finishing my young adult novel and realizing – “Hey! I can do this!” – I decided to try my hand at writing something on a more adult level. Initially, I didn’t start out even thinking about getting published. It was more of test for myself. Once the first book in my adult series was finished though, my family and friends encouraged me to go ahead and try submitting it. I did, not really expecting much to come of it, but was thrilled when I got several interested emails and an offer from MuseItUp Publishing.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

Entertainment, mostly. But it’s really up to each person. Everyone is at a different point in their life and everyone is looking for something. My book may not be the right choice for them at this particular point in their life, or it may touch something within them at a time that they needed it. At the very least, I hope they can escape for a little while and come get lost in my head with me – it’s really a fun place to be.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Exploring possibilities and connecting with my readers. There are no limits in writing. Whatever your imagination can dream up, you can turn it into a reality. I love talking to my readers and connecting with them about my characters. They come up with ideas and get impressions that completely blow me away. I’ve exchanged emails and met some really amazing people. It’s really humbling and incredible knowing my words and characters touched some part of their lives.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

My characters. They frequently don’t do what I expect. I’ll have an idea about what’s going to happen in a story, but my characters end up surprising me. It ends up throwing my entire idea out the window and most of the time, I feel like I’m just along for the ride. I’m just the narrator and they’re the ones driving the bus.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

Writing and storytelling is more than an art. It’s a passion. It’s a craft. You have to keep developing yourself as a writer, listen and absorb criticism with grace and humor, and keep loving what you do. But most of all… keep writing. Don’t ever give up.

What ways can readers connect with you?

Links to all of my social networking sites can be found at www.jamieawaters.com, including upcoming events posted on my blog. There’s also a contact form if you want to send me a direct email. You *will* get a response back. I love connecting with and talking to my readers.

I’m also going to be at the Authors After Dark Convention in Savannah, GA on August 3-7, 2016. I’ll be sponsoring a breakfast on Friday, doing a book signing on Saturday, and participating in a bunch of the events. I’d love to see some of you there!

Excerpt:
Kayla got down on hands and knees to crawl between the floor and a collapsed ancient wall in Sector 12. It would be a tight fit, but she’d navigated worse in the past. Taking a deep breath, she sucked in her stomach and squeezed through the narrow space.
Getting up, she brushed the dirt off her visor and shone the flashlight around what appeared to have once been a common room. Living room, she remembered. Although, there definitely wasn’t anything living in the room now. A thick shroud of dust and debris coated the surfaces within the room. The remnants of an old fireplace stood in the corner and pieces of broken furniture were scattered on the floor.
Closing her eyes, a deep breath helped to focus her thoughts. Using what she now knew as energy threads, she opened up her senses to explore the hidden world around. The darkness fell away, embracing the energy swirling in the ruins. The energy had the flavor of an almost living thing, inviting her to tap into it. She shivered as it poured in and her blood hummed with the rush of power. Her fingers unfurled as the energy became an almost tangible thing.
She basked in the warmth and excitement of the intoxicating power. As the energy flowing through her increased, it was a little easier to ignore the sense of wrongness and longing she suspected was from being separated from Alec.
It had only been six weeks since she left OmniLab towers. After she helped to restore control of the towers to those who would look after the best interests of the residents, she’d found herself irrevocably bonded to Alec, the new co-leader of the High Council. Even though he was enigmatic and alluring, the shared energy bond scared her more than she wanted to admit. He was likeable enough, but it was an OmniLab trader named Carl who had truly touched her heart.
Her face warmed at the thought of Carl. Even though they’d known each other for almost a year, it wasn’t until she recently joined his camp that she began to see him in a new light. The man had a quick mind and was incredibly devious, two traits she greatly admired.
Living as a ruin rat on the surface was a constant challenge. Survival was sometimes dependent upon outsmarting the OmniLab traders and their crews. Kayla enjoyed the challenges Carl provided, pitting her will against his. He seemed to understand her better than anyone else had in a long time. Of course, it didn’t hurt that he was sexy as hell too.
With a sigh, she pushed away the errant thoughts and focused back on the dilapidated room. The energy continued to flow around her, and she focused on channeling it until the mental image of the room began to shift and transform. The dingy walls became brightly painted surfaces covered with family photographs. A child played on the floor while her parents sat on the couch and watched an antique vidviewer on the wall.
She opened her eyes and stared at the verisimilitude of the ruined room. A wave of vertigo swept over her as the mental image overlapped with reality. Shaking her head, she pushed aside the image but the memory of the past refused to leave completely.
An old photograph caught her attention and she crossed the room toward the cockeyed frame. The glass was cracked and the picture faded, but she gasped at the sight of the image. The family looked exactly like the one she’d imagined. The energy flow spiked, and she swallowed nervously trying to regain control.
Veridian’s voice interrupted over her headset. “Kayla? You okay? Your vitals just spiked.”
“Uh, yeah. Sorry about that,” she said in a rush, not wanting to alarm her scavenging partner on the surface. He’d been monitoring her progress for the past hour. “I just found an old photograph and it surprised me. That’s all.”
Okay, Kayla, keep it together. You know this energy shit is freaky and you haven’t figured exactly how it works yet. Just relax.
A slight vibration under her feet caused her to freeze. The floor felt secure, but vibrations didn’t usually happen without reason. More curious than alarmed, she bent down and pressed her gloved hand against the ground. The vibration grew stronger.
“Kayla, get out of there now!” Veridian’s voice shouted over the headset. “We’ve got seismic activity on the monitors.”
The walls began shaking violently. A rumbling noise grew in intensity. Dust and debris fell around her. She crouched low against the wall, powerless to do anything else. The picture frame on the wall crashed to the floor. There was a loud cracking noise and she threw her arms up over her head as part of the ceiling collapsed.

Interview with the Author:

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’d initially started writing in elementary school. I found it therapeutic in a strange way. Although when I was younger, I’d really just viewed it as something fun I like doing to escape the world for a while, similar to when you read a book. I like creating stories and characters and new worlds. It was fun.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

After I had my daughter, I pulled together the storyline for the Revelation Series (my first book series) and a friend (who works in the publishing world) encouraged me to release it. Once I realized people didn’t hate it but wanted more, I was encouraged to continue writing and releasing my novels.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

Honestly, I want them to be able to escape day-to-day realities, even for a brief time. I hope my stories allow for that.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love the creative process, when the story comes together and all the plot pieces fall into place.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Writing – lol. It’s hard.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

Write stories you want to read. The end. Don’t follow trends, or worry if they will sell. Just write stories you love and that will ensure you’re heart is in each word.

What ways can readers connect with you?

Readers can always get in touch with me via any of my social media outlets: Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Amazon, Randi’s Rebels, which I happen to frequent often.

Thanks so much for having me today!

Tucker Littlefield is a lair, a thief, a con-man . In an attempt to take advantage of a party thrown by the King, he becomes involved in a kidnapping – the King’s niece, Elizabeth, to be exact. Because of his fear of the dark as well as heights, and a good many other things, he finds himself stabbed and bleeding to death.

To save him, a Shaman for the Jonda – Daneba – turns him into a soul bearer for the Kindred. In an effort to find Lizie, Littlefield finds the Norha instead and their leader Tahki – a cannibalistic tribe the lives under a volcano that will leave no stone unturned to find Lizie. Littlefield is blackmailed into her recovery.

Transformed by a primitive magic beyond a civilized man’s understanding, I was given a horrible gift that no man should possess… It held me, twisted me, turning me at its bidding. I was enslaved by its power, compelled to devour the souls of the dead until I became the monster of my fears. I have seen things I wish never to see again. I have done things of which I wish never to speak. Yet I must if I am to find the answers to fulfill my hope.

I have walked upon blue ribbons of molten stone to peer into the depth of a man’s soul. I watched as a promise made at birth brought my friend Enon to sacrifice everything to become whole again – all in an effort to save the life of his child. I have cried without shame for the loss of all I hold dear and for fear that the future will hold more than I can bear. I am Tucker Littlefield. Know all that I say now is true-spoken

Excerpt from Praise for The Gift: Chronicles Tucker Littlefield by Tegon Maus

Excerpt 1

The trees had grown closer together their shade deepened and travel between them more difficult.  I trotted next to Enon.  His stride, an easy gate for him, was so enormous I had to make every effort to keep up.

At long last Enon stopped at the edge of a small opening in the trees.  He held his hand over his head and gestured silently.

I had been so busy keeping up with him, I hadn’t noticed the others had spread out to the point they were no longer visible, all except Bowen and Enon himself. He gestured for my silence as a light breeze filtered through the trees.  I settled onto the ground next to Bowen and waited, happy for the lull.

With a faint rustle of leaves he and the dog trotted away from us.  The sound of a strange voice drifted from a short distance away.

Someone was talking to the dog.  I sank lower, trying to burrow under the leaves at the base of a large tree.  Bowen moved closer to me, hiding me with his body.  I wanted to look and edged my way up to peek over his shoulder.

There, not more than fifty feet away, was a half-naked man.  He was shorter than a Jonda but larger than me.  From the back of his head grew a long tuft of black hair, braided with leather its full length.  His head was shaved with this lone exception.  It laid as a single entity across his back, cut square at the bottom of his hunched shoulders. He turned briefly toward us, I was shocked. His face was a dull, ruddy red and stood as stark contrast to the gray tone that covered the remainder of his body.  Square, primitive, with a single brow and a protruding jaw his face was like no other I have ever seen.  His body and arms were as muscled as any Jonda, only squatter, more compact standing on short powerful legs. He was covered only by a loincloth laced at the hip. It seemed unnatural he would be wearing anything at all.

Praise for Gift: Chronicles Tucker Littlefield by Tegon Maus

“Magical, is the first word, which came to my mind when I finished this story. Right from the very first page, I found myself totally captivated by Tucker’s storytelling of this wonderful adventure.
Tucker Littlefield is an amazing character, when reading it I immediately thought of John Carpenter’s fisherman storyteller at the beginning of `The Fog’ film, where the children gather round as the scene is set… as, when reading it, I felt as if I too was actually there, sitting in the tavern, listening.
I cannot praise this book enough; it truly deserves to become a classic, the stuff of legends. As far as I am concerned, it has a fantastic storyline, the author has created some wonderful characters and I believe it would make a brilliant film!
I hope we shall be seeing more Chronicles of Tucker Littlefield in the future.”-Susan Keefe, Author or ‘Fantasy Farm Tales’

“I really enjoyed The Gift. The author is a fantastic world builder. I really felt transported into a new world with a unique magical system, not some kind of Tolkien knock-off. (so many stories these days are all about wizards and elves and dwarves). The main character, Tucker, was likeable and comical–a real person with human frailties and yearnings– and an unlikely hero everyone will root for. If you are looking for a fantasy novel that is not a Lord of the Rings rehash, then I think you’ll enjoy this one.”- Joseph N. Sidari, Amazon Reviewer

“This story is a very exciting and fast paced read. You will get wrapped up in the descriptions of the types of people who exist in the world. You will love the uniqueness to the magic. You will also discover that some things are left unknown. I enjoyed it very much..”- Phaedra Seabolt, Author of ‘Imperfection’

About Tegon MausTegon Maus

Tegon Maus was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends he could conjure. Not that he wasn’t friendly, he just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe he lived in his head way more than he should have, maybe not. He liked machines more than people, at least he did until I met his wife.

The first thing he can remember writing was for her. For the life of him he can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married him shortly after that. He spent a good number  of years chasing other dreams before he got back to writing.

It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. His wife and himself had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.

He was thrilled. If there is one thing he enjoys it’s making people believe him and he likes to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mind you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not.  When he writes, he always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, he guarantees you, nothing, makes him happier.

He has consistently placed in the top 3 in 189 writing contest in a variety of genres and has been featured in magazines a couple of times to raise money for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Set in the 1940s, The Quarters features quite the cast of characters and is a funny, quick read with themes of murder, family, race, church, community, passing and a con artist.

Set partially in the small rural town of Preston, Georgia where Louise and Betty Jean (a.k.a. “Honey”) were raised by their loving father and not so loving step-mother.  After the third-body that Louise has had to help Honey dispose of, Honey decides to get the heck out of dodge before someone starts missing those boys.

When she takes up residence in a quirky, yet humorous community called The Quarters, life is peaceful and as comfortable as can be in the humid south until a handsome stranger rolls into town, talking sweet and looking nice.  Simee brings news of money that could come to the local church, but like any overly-confidence con artist, Simee is up to no good and soon the church’s leadership is knee deep in a scam that could result in the loss of valuable land.

Unfortunately… he’s not been made privy of the “accidents” Honey has been prone to and how men tend to end up dead all around her…

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What initially got you interested in writing?

This novel has been a part of me for over 25 years. My mom and aunt shared some quirky stories with me from their childhood that I couldn’t shake. The stories were compelling, funny, and in my opinion worthy of documenting. I was compelled to write the stories.

How did you decide to make the move into becoming a published author?

It never occurred to me to “not” publish my novel. Prior to actually starting to write, I knew I would have a novel. I wasn’t so sure others would want to read it.

What do you want readers to take away from reading works?

My hopes are that readers will take away a few things. One thing in particular is the commonality of community and family. I’ve not encountered one person yet, regardless of race, sex, religion, etc. that hasn’t found a character they can personally relate to. From the nosey neighbor to the quirky church folk, there’s a character in there for you. One other thing is that I’m hoping readers walk away entertained. One question I consistently ask readers (if I can) is, did it make you laugh.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The most rewarding part of writing is getting “stuff” out my head. The more I write, the more I want to write.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

The most challenging part of writing is hoping “it” makes sense to the readers. Am I able to translate my thoughts, humor, etc. in an acceptable and entertaining manner.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

I would say, go for it. Write, write, and write some more. One more thing, be sure to hire a professional editor. It’s worth it.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

Let me think. I love red wine and cheap gummy bears…together. LOL!

 The Quarters - Mari Bell
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I’m Marichele Bell.  I know, you’re thinking Marichele Bell?  Yep, that’s a real name and it belongs to me.  Prior to getting married, I was Marichele Scrutchins.  But you can call me Mari, everyone else does. I’m a sales manager by day and a writer by night.  If you consider funeral announcements, editing friends and family’s writing assignments, and cleaning up resumes writing, then I’m your girl.   Seriously, from the age of maybe 11, I can remember being told by someone “you can write”.  The complements came from a variety of reputable sources, starting with my Mom.  Who’s more reputable than her.   That’s a rhetorical question.  Over time, others, i.e. professors, employers, friends, and more family would on occasion make the same comment.  One of my first memories is from my fifth grade teacher Mrs. Moey.  I remember her quite well.  She was tall, wore cat glasses, had black girl hips (like me), and very tall stiff blond hair, straight up and down. The kind of hair that dared not to move or it just might have toppled her over.   I do believe she kept cans of Aqua Net on standby.  Any hoo, one of our class assignments was to write a short story.  I chose purple bubble gum as my subject.  I can’t remember whether it was Bubble Yum, Bubblicious, or Double Bubble, but it was bubble gum and it was purple.  That simple short story drew laughs from her and my fellow 11 year old comrades.  I remember being surprised by their reaction and laughter.  It was only a few paragraphs, but hey, who am I to dismiss my super hero comical talents.  From there, I received more compliments by others; I just never took them that seriously.  Flash forward years later, I sat down with my Mom and my Aunt and listened while they shared memories of their childhood.  I couldn’t believe some, well, most of the stuff I was hearing.  The community they grew up in held secrets, shame, and humor, so much humor.  I was captivated.  They were beyond entertaining. I couldn’t stop asking questions, but more importantly, I couldn’t stop laughing.  Thankfully, those two planted the seed for The Quarters.  Here it is over 20 years later and finally I was compelled to write this book.  It’s in memory of my Grandmomma, Mrs. Louise Scott who was one of the funniest ladies I’ve ever known.  It is also a tribute to my Mom, Pearline Scrutchins. She is not only hilarious in her own right, but  smart, loving, and just a wonderful mother.  I surely can’t leave out my aunts and uncles.  Some of the funnies in The Quarters, came directly from them.  And finally the real people of the Quarters.  Most of them have passed away now, but they left such a rich impression on me.  My hopes are that this book will carry their humor, kindness, and love for generations.

ABOUT THE BOOK

IntheMindofRevenge_finalcover

“Mine is a tale of pain, hate, lies, murder, injustice, vengeance, and love unreturned. It began much like yours; a hopeful innocent born to a world of endless possibilities. But my journey has rarely been paved with opportunities of light. Confronted by those who sought to eclipse what light I had found, the darkness came for me. Wrapped in its intoxicating embrace, I have risen
from the dead to reclaim my dignity and the life that was taken from me. I have begun my journey into the mind of revenge. Revenge for me. Revenge for those like me. Those who are shamed.”
In the Mind of Revenge , book one of T he Shamed Series , takes a deep look at how monsters are born. Set in a society that glorifies “normal” and demonizes different, this dark tale takes its readers on an emotionally wild ride of vengeance, murder, pain and desperation. Though the reader is warned by its main character, Shame, not to develop an attachment, the first person
narrative combined with Shame’s uninhibited vulnerability makes it nearly impossible not to do so. Raw, vivid, honest, fastpaced and beautifully vulgar, In the Mind of Revenge is sure to have you emotionally twisted from beginning to end.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’ve always enjoyed it! I became acutely aware of it when I was in 5th grade; we had a prompt to write a story where repetition was used effectively. I had been playing a lot of Frogger at the time, so I wrote a tale of a very resilient frog, determined to cross the street no matter how many times he got squished. We had to read the stories out loud, and by the time I was halfway through, I had to whole class repeating, “Hop, hop, hop!” with me. Anyway, my teacher pulled me aside after class and said, “One day you’re going to write a novel, and I can’t wait to read it.” Boom, an author was born.

How did you decide to make the move into becoming a published author?

It’s been a dream of mine to write a book since that day. The seed was already planted! After I had written about eighty pages of “In the Mind of Revenge” (titled The Shamed at the time), I thought, “Eighty pages is too far to call this a short story hobby. Let’s go for gold!” Or something like that; my brain isn’t necessarily that peppy.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

Obviously, I want them to have an enjoyable reading experience, whatever that means to them. For me, it’s usually being so engrossed in a story I lose time and feel transported into the world the author has created. I also think there are some important social messages on gender and how we treat people who are different. Shame also presents some interesting internal debate for readers that I’ve enjoyed getting feedback on.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

There isn’t anything I don’t find rewarding. If I had to pick, I’d say going back and reading something I wrote and totally not remembering I wrote it. It’s a cool, out of body experience that reminds me I’m capable of more than I think.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Not having enough time to do it! I’m not a full-time author yet, so balancing a full-time job and finding time to write can be challenging.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Begin the begin! I think a lot of people wait until they have everything just right, or they have the right equipment, or their less busy. There will always be a reason not to start, something else you could be doing, and someone who will think it’s a bad idea. You can’t finish if you don’t start.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I travel abroad once or twice every year; most recently I went on a cycling trip around Lake Konstanz, which is on the border of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It was a beautiful trip, and I’ll definitely be doing another one!

What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?

You can find me almost everywhere!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Liv 003BW

Debut novelist Liv Hadden has been writing ever since she was a little girl. But, it wasn’t until 5th grade when her teacher said she’d one day write a book that she started taking it seriously.
Her Shamed series began in college, when Hadden employed her writing as an outlet for her feelings during a serious bout of depression. After a brief,
yet impactful first night of writing, she dreamt of a shadowy figure, tormented and demonized by their own mind and realized this was the shadow of pain
that hurting people everywhere felt.

She woke from her dream feeling more energized that she had in months, picked up her computer and began to write. “I felt if ever there was a story
inside me and a character worth taking the leap, it was Shame and this story,” says Hadden. “This one in particular is personal in nature, and perhaps the
very reason it’s so close to my heart.”

Hadden has her roots in Burlington, Vermont and has lived in upstate New York and Oklahoma, where she went to college at the University of Oklahoma, and earned her degree in Environmental Sustainability Planning & Management. She now resides in Austin, TX with her husband and two dogs, Madison and Samuel and is an active member of the Writer’s League of Texas.
Incredibly inspired by artistic expression, Hadden immerses herself in creative
endeavors on a daily basis. She finds great joy in getting lost in writing and seeing others fully express themselves through their greatest artistic passions, like music, body art, dance and photography. “I get chills when I have the great privilege of seeing someone express their authentic selves,” says Hadden. “I believe it gives us a true glimpse into the souls of others.
